Ingredients

Our most frequently questioned ingredients, what they are, and what they're for. All of our handmade products are gluten-free, and the majority are vegan.

Grapefruit Seed Extract

This is a natural preservative made from the seeds and pulp of the Citrus paradisi, and it has natural antioxidant and preservative properties. GSE is not a completely full-spectrum preservative, but it helps prevent bacteria and microbes.

Cocoamidopropyl Betaine

Although the name sounds intimidating, this fatty acid made from raw coconut oil. In skincare, it's used as a detergent and as a thickener.

Glycerin

This is a compound that is naturally derived from either vegetable oils or animal fats. Our source of glycerin is vegetable oil, and is certified vegan. It is used to moisturize the skin, and can also provide a softening effect on rough skin.

Xanthan Gum

This is a thickener, and is also used as a stabilizer. It's made from fermented sugar. Much like in gluten-free baking, xanthan gum is used as a thickener and texture enhancer in skincare products.

Phenoxyethanol

Although this ingredient is found naturally in green tea, it is usually synthetically manufactured. Once made, it is used as a preservative and limits bacterial growth. There has been concern about consumers having negative reactions to products containing more than 0.6% phenoxyethanol - our products contain 0.3% or less.

Hydrolyzed Soy Protein

To make hydrolyzed soy protein, water is added to large soy molecules. This causes the molecules to break down into their smaller amino acids. In skincare, this ingredient provides anti-aging properties, and assists with the skin's moisture balance.

Citric Acid

This is an organic compound, and is found in citrus fruits. It's an anti-oxidant, and is also used for exfoliating.

Questions

Why is my butter-based product separating?

It's normal to see oil separating from your butter-based products. We add oils like peach kernel, sour cherry, and essential oils to many of our products, and although they are thoroughly blended, some separation is normal. If this happens, stir your product and place it in the fridge for a little while to allow the ingredients to solidify. Separation is more common in products that have been exposed to heat, as some of the butters have a lower melting point.

How long is a product good for once I open it?

Because our products don't have chemical preservatives, they aren't intended to last as long as factory-made products. We make everything in very small batches (10-12 containers at a time) to ensure that your product is as fresh as possible. Once butter-based products are open, they should last up to three months. Store your product somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight. Oil based products can last up to one year.

I have a discount code, but it isn't working. Help?

The discount code should be entered on the checkout page. If the page doesn't accept the code, make sure it isn't expired (e.g. the promo ended the day before). If it still won't work, please contact us and we'll help you with the code.

How come some products don't have a free sample?

The nature of some products makes them incredibly difficult to make in miniature sizes, such as liquids. The cost of the required type of containers currently isn't reasonable for a small business.
